STARTwork inhabits the space between traditional work clubs and Start in Salford’s Inspiring Minds Arts on Prescription provision: it offers support in a safe environment in which to explore topics where mental health and employment interact and it harnesses the benefits that arts can have on our health, channelling this towards members’ goals for going back to work. From working with Inspiring Minds members, a need was identified for more tailored and direct support for members who wanted to work. STARTwork emphasises the importance of members seeking suitable employment for them, not just any job- it is good work that is healthy for us, one that uses our skills and suits our personality.

A STARTwork day is split into two parts- the morning sees information and skills-training sessions. The sessions enable members to explore strategies for overcoming potential barriers to work. So the group chat about benefits, practise assertiveness skills, learn about the Equality Act and consider how to explain a gap in a CV and how to answer health-related questions. Previous members who now work come back to answer the group’s sessions about their experience of returning to work. The group look ahead, sharing ideas about how to manage health at work.

After lunch, the group explore ‘Changes’ and collaborate creatively to consider what this means for going back to work. The two groups produce a story of change–group one made an animation & group two are creating one using printing and papercutting. Using story & metaphor, members can safely explore the process of change and consider strategies for getting better. It generates teamwork, communication and time management skills. It boosts confidence too– an exhibition of the work is a tangible outcome and a chance to reflect on the achievement.
